Welcome to the Community Energy Activator.

The Community Energy Activator is a programme that supports communities across Aotearoa New Zealand to explore, design, and take action on local energy projects.

Through workshops, hui, and hands-on learning, this 13-week programme connects people with the knowledge, tools, and networks they need to develop energy projects that reflect their community’s values and aspirations.

Your Community, Your Energy.

Discover what your community wants when it comes to energy. We are exploring various sustainable community energy models and topics outlined in the Ara Ake Community Energy How-to Guide.

Why community energy?

Community energy is emerging as a powerful way for local groups, such as neighbourhoods, iwi, businesses or community groups, to take charge of how energy is generated, stored and used.

As Aotearoa New Zealand transitions toward a low-emissions future, community energy projects are proving their value by:

  • Reducing energy costs

  • Easing pressure on the electricity network

  • Building stronger, more resilient communities

  • Reducing emissions
